Cabell-Wayne Association of the Blind
Mission and Vision Statements
Our Mission:
Cabell-Wayne Association of the Blind is committed to promoting and advocating the economic, educational, and social welfare of the blind and visually impaired of all ages so that they can maintain a lifestyle comparable to other members of society.
Our Vision:
CWAB® will be seen nationally as a model for organizations and agencies that help blind and visually impaired persons achieve maximum independence. CWAB® will be known for timely and appropriate state-of-the-art responses to the changing needs of consumers throughout the Tri-State area and beyond.
From the Director’s Desk
Hello Everyone ...
The end of the year is going out with a lot of activity! Joanna Holbrook and her volunteers made fudge to sell, raising $420 for the association. We also sold $94 in raffle tickets for a Marshall stocking donated by Glenn’s Sporting Goods and a gift basket donated by First Priority Credit Union. The items were awarded during the Christmas dinner held Saturday, December 13th. Thanks to everyone who donated, and to those who purchased tickets.
Speaking of the Christmas party ... we had a great time at our annual event. One-hundred twenty-seven consumers, family members, and volunteers attended pushing the Paul Slone Activities Center to its limit! The Harmonica Club provided entertainment, the Bible Apostolic Church furnished a great holiday meal, and Santa posed for photos with the kids. Our thanks to Charlene Haynie, Millie Keeney, and Margaret Beach for providing the table decorations which were used as door prizes.
At the dinner, association president Kim Black presented the Board Member of the Year award to Brenda Blake while I presented a well-deserved Employee of the Year award to Toni Walls.
Cabell-Wayne Association of the Blind is embarking on an exciting new project. With the assistance of Media-Marketing Manager Jerry Crabtree and Dennie Large, Marketing and Creative Services Director of WQCW in Charleston, we will be producing a 30-minute agency video. The production will begin after the first of the year and will highlight our agency’s services, staff, and consumers. The project, when completed, will be suitable for airing on local TV and will also be shortened to a 10 minute version which will be posted on our website as well as distributed at national conferences which staff members may attend. I?would urge you to participate if you are called on to do so. This project will give CWAB® a great deal of exposure.
In closing, we would like to extend to you and your family a sincere wish for a Merry Christmas and a joyous and prosperous New Year.
Until next month .....

The GUIDE PAGE MAGAZINE "Narrator of the Month" for December was Deborah Linz of WCHS-TV8 and Fox11 in Charleston, WV.
The GUIDE?PAGE?MAGAZINE?Narrator of the Month for December 2008 was Deborah Linz.
A native of Maryland, Deborah Linz loves West Virginia. "I actually grew up in Olney, Maryland and graduated from Virginia Tech.," she stated. "Yes, I am a HOKIE, and proud of it!" she added.
Linz’ first TV job was in Roanoke, Virginia as a weather anchor and medical reporter. After a year and a half she graduated to weekend reporter at WICD-TV in Champaign, Illinois. She later took the weekend anchor job at WICS in Springfield, Illnois where she won several A.P. awards for Best Reporter in downstate Illinois, Best Investigative Reporting, and Best Series.
In 1995 Linz moved back to Maryland and became a freelance reporter. Linz also worked for TVSD, a division of NBC where she did national packages and live shots for NBC affiliates all over the country. "It was very exciting talking to anchors in North Carolina and two minutes later being on the air in Seattle," Linz recalled.
In January of 1999, the news director of WCHS/WVAH, called about a full time anchoring job on the Fox affiliate in Charleston, WV. "It was an opportunity I couldn't pass up," says Linz. "I have enjoyed working here very much and I hope viewers enjoy watching as well!"
You can contact Deborah at: DLinz@wchstv.com.
THERE ARE TWO PHOTOS WITH THIS ARTICLE - The first on the left-hand page is a three-quarter page photo of Linz. She has to-the-shoulder-length blonde hair, is wearing a rec business suit jacket with white blouse underneath, she las a small red and white beaded necklace and she is broadly smiling. In the background the letters WCHS can be seen. The second photo on the opposite page is similar.
Support Group Visited By Students of Native American Flute
CWAB® Support Group B leader Christine Hunt introduced special guests Thursday, December 4th. The guests, from Marshall University, offered a unique presentation of the native american flute.
Students Emily Crabtree and Felicia Gross demonstrated and performed original and traditional music on the hand-carved instruments. Reading from prepared text, Crabtree told the group "tradition says that even after a tree falls, its spirit still lives." Crabtree continued, "So when you play the wooden flute, you are breathing the air into the tree, thus, it speaks." The group was given informative material in large print and braille and were given the opportunity to make their own music on simple flutes made from PVC?plastic pipe. Crabtree invited the group to attend a Native American Flute Circle meeting this April.
"You are wonderful," exclaimed leader Christine Hunt. "I think you should come back to see us next year."
Crabtree ended the activity by presenting Hunt with a PVC-made flute. "Next year, I’ll play along," Hunt heartily added.
THERE ARE FOUR PHOTOS WITH THIS ARTICLE - The first - a quarter-page photo at the top center of the page shows Crabtree and Gross as they play their instruments during a demonstration performance. The next three photos show support group members Lee Graves, Chris Hunt, and Sadie Robson.

Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Review
It’s time to start thinking about your Medicare Prescription drug coverage for next year. Anyone who has a Medicare Prescription plan (Part D) should review their coverage to ensure that it is still the best option for the upcoming year.
Each year brings changes in premium and coverage which makes it vital that you evaluate each year for the most appropriate plan for you. The open enrollment period is from November 15 until December 31.
If you would like to schedule an appointment to discuss this very important decision and to evaluate your choices please call me at 522-6991. You can also visit www.medicare.gov to get more information.
Thank you, Toni I. Walls - Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist - Cabell-Wayne Association of the Blind. THERE IS A PHOTO OF TONI IN HER OFFICE WITH THIS ARTICLE.
Christmas At Our House .....
Cabell-Wayne Association of the Blind held its annual Christmas party Saturday, December 13th. The Paul Slone Activities Center was jam-packed with over 120 consumers, family, and volunteers - "Our biggest crowd ever," according to Executive Director Paul Slone.
"We didn’t have to travel all the way to Ona this year," Slone acknowledged. "I think that was the reason for the large crowd." he added.
The Bible Apostolic church provided the holiday meal, while the Harmonica Club provided entertainment. Santa greeted everyone and presented gifts to the youngsters.
Beginning with a full-page photo of Santa - THERE ARE NINE PHOTOS WITH THIS ARTICLE - photos show various scenes from Cabell-Wayne Association of the Blind’s annual Christmas party. The article ends with the words ... "Merry Christmas to all .. And to all, a good night!"

Whether it is traveling to places in the community or needs within your home, such as using the phone, knowing what time it is or labeling medications O&M can provide you with products and techniques that will allow you to take control of your life.
COMPUTER TRAINING - Training is the key to computer technology. Utilizing keyboard keystrokes and enhancement software, the student learns to complete a variety of tasks sighted computer users take for granted. Limited vision should not limit your technical training.
